14U Cavs Take Home Their First Hardware of the Season
Richmond, VA (U-Turn Sports Academy) May 12th
Saturday, May 12th- NOVA Cavs 41 – Toano Storm 48. The 14U NOVA Cavaliers travelled on the road down I-95 South for a one day tournament at U-Turn May Flowers Classic. In the first game of the tournament, they squared off against a talented team from Williamsburg, VA in Toano Storm.
Cavs got off to a lackluster start during the first 8 minutes of the contest, spotting Storm a double digit lead before finally settling down in the game. Down by as many as 12 points in the second half, NOVA made their way back into the game with some gritty hustles and energetic plays.
Despite their fighting spirits, Cavs could not overcome the deficit and lost by 7 points in the end. The loss dropped NOVA to 0-1 on the day. They will take on Basics First from Reston, VA next.
Saturday, May 12th- NOVA Cavs 24 – Basics First (Blaze) 21. Cavaliers won a barn burner in an intense 3 point narrowing victory over Basics First Blaze. In a low-scoring affair, NOVA got off to a solid start to the game and never trailed in the contest.
Cavs executed on the offensive end and played hardnosed defense enroot to a 12-11 lead at the half. In the second half, Basics First made a strong comeback and actually tied the game with less than three minutes left. Point Guard Andrew Dinh then found Brendan Doyle on two key baskets in back to back possession, helping the Cavs retake a lead that they never relinquished again.
William Unterkofler also hit two big free throws down the stretch, while Patrick Hesse had a steal in the final seconds to prevent a chance for Basics First to tie the game.The win brings Cavaliers to 1-1 in the Tournament with a chance to clinch a Top Three. NOVA will take on EBA All-Stars next in the finale of the May Flowers Classic.
Saturday, May 12th- NOVA Cavs 52 – EBA All-Stars 33. NOVA Cavs finished off the tournament with a satisfying win over EBA All-Stars. The Cavs were led by Patrick Hesse, Nate Shafer and Nathan Orricks with terrific performances. Cavaliers wrapped up the tournament with a 2-1 record and were awarded with a Third Place finish. NOVA take home their first trophy of the season. They will have next weekend off and host their annual car-wash at McLean Sunoco Gas Station.
