April 11 – 12th Weekend Recap
NOVA Cavs 16U-Sawitzky Championship Photo at Robert E. Lee HS after winning the Championship at the BRYC Open Classic this weekend
District Heights, MD – Nine of the NOVA Cavalier teams were in action this past weekend for the official kick-off of the new 2015 AAU season.
The 11U, 14U, and 15U Cavs participated in the Loudoun Invitational Tournament (LIT) hosted by Leesburg Basketball Club and D1SA Spartans. The 14U-Frate Cavs finished the tournament 4-1 , which started with a thrilling 55-52 double overtime win over NOVA 94 Orange on Friday night, followed by a tough 50-44 OT loss to Culpepper Heat. The Cavs were then placed in the Silver Bracket on Sunday and went on a roll. They won three consecutive games with wins over D1 Hunter Select, NOVA 94ft Orange, and NOVA 94ft Blue to take home the Silver Bracket Championship.
11U Sullender completed the tournament with a 1-2 record. NOVA suffered a tough opening game loss to WDBA on Saturday, then defeated Culpeper Blue Thunder 26-24 in a nail-biter to finish pool-play. The Cavs then dropped a tough loss to the host D1SA 31-26 in a valiant effort in the first round of bracket play. 15U Gray-Mendes was also in action at the LIT. They finished the tournament 0-3 with losses to Chantilly Elite, D1SA Spartan Elite, and Fairfax Stars. Both teams will play next weekend in the Mid-Atlantic Showcase at Fredericksburg, VA.
17U-Knoche, 17U-Lin, and 16U-Corish Cavaliers were in action at the MD Flames Fast Break Shootout in Catholic University. Both 17U-Knoche and 16U-Corish finished the round robin event with a 2-1 record. 17U-Lin went 3-0 with a 43-25 win over West Virginia Warriors, a 34-32 win over Columbia Ravens, and a 74-29 win over Urbana Elite. 13U-Weeren also participated in the Quad State Basketball Classic in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The 7th grade Cavs finished the weekend 1-2 with strong showings throughout the two-day tournament.
NOVA Cavs 17U-O’Donnell played in one of the most competitive local tournaments this weekend at the Big Shots DC Spring NCAA Certified event. The Cavaliers dropped three tough losses to Threat 220, NJ Trailblazers and JJ Ballers in the SLAM division. Coach O’Donnell’s team will travel to Pittsburgh next to play in the Hoop Group Jam Fest event the following weekend.
Finally, a big congratulation goes out to the BRYC Open Classic Champion: the 16U-Sawitzky NOVA Cavaliers. Coach Sawitzky’s team steamrolled through the tournament and defeated the DC Phenoms in an exciting tournament final for their first Championship of the season. Great start to the season! We look forward to lots more exciting news for all the Cavalier teams in the 2015 season!
