April 22 – 24th Weekend Tournament Recap
NOVA Cavs 17U-Corish warming up before the game at D. Lawarence Convention Center in the Hoop Group Pittsburgh Jam Fest this weekend
Pittsburgh, PA / Ashburn, VA / Hyattsville, MD – Four of the NOVA Cavalier teams were in action this weekend in Pittsburgh (PA), Ashburn (VA) and Hyattsville (MD).
Both the 17U-Corish and 17U-Sawitzky Cavaliers were up in Pittsburgh this weekend in the prestigious Hoop Group Jam Fest at the D. Lawrence Convention Center. The two NOVA Cavs teams had strong showings throughout the weekend in a major showcase event in front of hundreds college coaches. Coach Sawitzky’s team continues to play well in the early part of the season, as they finished with a solid 2-2 record with wins over Central PA Elite and Wildcats Basketball (Canada). Sami El-Rafey of Langley HS had a particularly strong weekend of performance; he averaged a team best 11.5 ppg for the tournament and helped lead the squad to two well-earned victories.
Coach Corish’s team played in the Platinum Bracket and dropped the opening game against Monroe County All Stars (NY). Cavs bounced back the next game with a 47-37 win over Southern Tier Rage (NY), then dropped the last game of the tournament with a 56-51 loss to Team PA. Both Johnny Corish (Madison HS) and Khalil Williams-Diggins (West Potomac HS) played well throughout the tournament, garnering several college interests along with several other Cavs members in the organization.
14U and 15U-Frate Cavaliers also played in a tournament this weekend. 14U Cavs completed the Catoctin Challenge with a 4-0 record, while the 15U-Frate team was decimated by injuries, finished the weekend 0-3 despite strong 5 man efforts throughout the tournament in the Big Time Hoops DC Live event.
Next weekend, most of the teams in the NOVA Cavs organization will participate in the Zero Gravity Collision in the Capital event at Catholic University (DC). Look for the schedule to be publish very soon.
