NOVA Revenges Earlier Loss in the Season to team from Fairfax
Bowie, MD (City of Bowie Gymnasium) June 16 – 17th
Saturday, June 16th- NOVA Cavs 53 – Columbia Ravens 57. The 14U NOVA Cavs entered their summer portion of the season by participating in the Potomac Valley Father’s Day Bump II Classic hosted by MD Mavericks. In their first game of pool play, the Cavaliers could not stop the hot shooting Columbia Ravens team and dropped a close game by 4 points. NOVA had a rusty start to the game and were down by 10 points after the first six minutes of play, but William Unterkofler kept the team scoring half of his team high 20 points in the first half. The Cavs found themselves down by only a basket at the intermission.
In the second half, NOVA made the first run and took a brief lead midway through the half. However, a scoring drought allowed the Ravens to made a comeback and overtake the lead during the final minutes. Cavaliers then failed to execute during a key possession of the game, leading to a disappointing loss in the end. With the defeat, NOVA Cavs have to win in their next game of pool-play to avoid being eliminated from the Tournament; they will take on HC Elite White.
Saturday, June 16th- NOVA Cavs 31 – HC Elite White 57. Cavaliers dropped their second game in the row to HC Elite from Howard County, MD. NOVA turned the ball over in a uncharacteristic manner, leading to many transition points for Elite on the fast break. Cavs finished pool-play with an 0-2 record. They will take on Fairfax Heat in a consolation game to wrap up the tournament.
Sunday, June 17th- NOVA Cavs 46 – Fairfax Heat 14. Cavaliers revenged a 7 points loss to Fairfax Heat in a rematch since the last time they met nearly two months ago. NOVA clamped down defensively and forced their opponent to a bad shooting performance. Cavaliers also shared the ball on the offensive end, which led to high percentage shots that helped them took a 24 -10 lead at the half.
NOVA withstood a rally by Fairfax Heat during the first 4 minutes of the second half. Cavaliers recompose themselves after a timeout, and then went on a huge run to put the game away. Andrew Dinh, Alex Beckett and Nate Shafer all played terrifically in the second half. The big run ended with a 30 point margin in the end. Cavs finished the tournament 1-2 overall. They will take next weekend off and play in Charm City East Coast Summer Slam at Baltimore, MD in two weeks.
