16U-Lin Cavs Start Season Strong

Charm City Tournament Recap

In the debut of the season for 16u, the NOVA Cavaliers ran away with a win, beating the Baltimore Ballers.  The Cavs jumped out to a 42-10 lead at halftime behind 3 three-pointers from Seamus Maloney and 9 first half points from Avi Silberman, who finished a rebound shy of a double-double.  NOVA cruised through the second half with strong post play from Nate Shafer and Finn Gundersen en route to a commanding 63-19 win.

The Cavaliers came out ice cold from the field in the second game of the day, starting 3 for 19.  But Danny Krug scored 7 straight points, kick-starting a 25-4 run to go into the half up 31-9.  Nate Shafer had 9 of his 11 boards in the first half in a double-double performance. Paulino Matondo had 12 points to go along with 4 assists, 4 steals, and 6 rebounds and Krug ended with 14 points as the Cavs blew out the Redeemer Royals, 58-24.

NOVA clinched the Charm City Classic championship on Sunday with a gutsy effort against Next Level Elite.  Next Level quickly barraged the Cavs from three, but NOVA rebounded through 5 first half assists from Andrew Dinh and 6 points off the bench by Finn Gundersen.  The Cavaliers took a 22-20 lead into the half, and never relinquished that lead.  Clutch baskets from Danny Krug, Paulino Matondo, and Avi Silberman assured the Cavs would leave Baltimore with a trophy in their first tournament of the year, beating Next Level 43-40.
