July 2 – 3rd Weekend Tournament Recap

17U Cavs finished as the Champions this past weekend in the Beast of Baltimore Classic at Maryland Junior Sports Center in Jessup, MD

Jessup, MD –  Only two of the NOVA Cavalier teams were in action this weekend, but both came out victorious as Tournament Champions in Maryland.

Both the 14U and 17U-Corish’s team participated in the Beast of Baltimore Classic in Jessup, MD.  Both teams had an outstanding weekend, as they accumulated combined record of 7-1 and won the tournament championship for their respective age groups.  14U Cavs were led by Ricky Peters, Simon Weeren and Josh Abtew with solid performances throughout the weekend.  They completed the weekend with a 4-0 record and took home the championship.

The 17U Corish’s team was gearing up for their summer stretch run in July.  Cavs faced two early competitive games against Maryland Mavericks and Team Choo, before clamping down defensively in the second halves in both Saturday’s victories.  On Sunday, NOVA was upset by Diamond City All-Stars on a buzzer-beating shot at end of regulation.  After regrouping from the last game of pool-play, Cavaliers turned it on in the tournament final and avenged the earlier loss with a convincing 59-36 win over Diamond City in the rematch.   Riley Jorgenson (Madison), Idaresit Ekpul (West Potomac) and Mahmood Kanu (Fairfax) played terrifically throughout the tournament leading the Cavs to their third championships of the season.

Next weekend, all of the NOVA Cavs older teams will be in action and 17U-Sawitzky team will highlight the weekend by participating in the BasketBull Summer Championships in Springfield, MA.  It will be a fun July for all the NOVA Cavs teams!

Go Cavs!
