Fairfax, VA / Loudoun, VA / Hyattsville, MD – Eight of the NOVA Cavalier teams were in action this weekend in the DMV metro area.
15U and 10U Cavaliers participated in the Commonwealth Classic at Loudoun County this weekend. Coach DeSenti’s team had their best tournament of the season, as they went 3-0 on Saturday before falling in the tournament final. 15U-Dashti also had a solid 2-2 showing. Led by Evan Stout (McLean) and Drew Pitters (Robinson), Coach Dashti’s team defeated VA Force and WV Blackout, before succumbing to Hoop Hill in the tournament semifinal.
12U Cavs squared off against good competitions all weekend long at the Zero Gravity Battle of the Beltway tournament at Hyattsville, MD. NOVA went 1-2 on the weekend and finished Sunday on a positive note with win over Team Skillz.
Coach Frate’s 15U Cavs made a strong run in the Big Shots Virginia Invitational Tournament (VIT) this weekend at Paul VI. Led by Matias Prock (McLean HS) with a tournament-high 17.5 points per game average, the Cavaliers breezed through the first two rounds of the tournament before falling to Erick Green Premier in the final. NOVA was also boosted by the return of Brien Krug (Robinson), who played fantastic throughout the weekend and helped the team to a respectable 2-1 record.
14U Cavs also had a solid showing this weekend at Big Shots VIT. Clyde Volker (Blue Ridge MS), Simon Weeren (Blue Ridge MS) and Ricky Peters (Hammond MS) all had outstanding performances throughout the tournament. After dropping a double-overtime loss to Fairfax Cowboys in the tournament opener, Cavs rolled on with two straight wins over Fairfax Stars – Zinti and ProLook – Treakle to capture the Silver Bracket title.
Both 17U Cavs played terrifically at the Big Shots VIT as well. 17U-Sawitzky won both games on Saturday with victories over PW Hoyas and ProLook – Willis, before losing to the eventual Tournament Champion Higher Level Sports Premier in the semifinal. Coach Sawitzky’s team received strong performances from Joey Hamer (Bishop Ireton), Sami El-Rafey (Langley) and Jordan James (Marshall). Meanwhile, 17U-Corish also went on the run with win over ProLook – Robinson and a sensational comeback victory over CEBA Team Envy in the semi. Khalil Williams-Diggins (West Potomac), Johnny Corish (Madison) and James Diluigi (Stone Bridge) played very well in all three contests. Coach Corish’s team fell to Higher Level in the Championship game despite a close contest for much of the game.
Next weekend, most of the teams in the NOVA Cavs organization will participate in the Rock the Rim Tournament in Philadelphia or Loudoun Invitational Tournament. Look for the schedule to be publish very soon.
Go Cavs!
