May 30 – 31st Weekend Tournament Recap

NOVA Cavs 17U-Lin Championship Photo at U-Turn Sports Academy after winning the Championship at Zero Gravity UA Regional Championship in Richmond this weekend

 

Loudoun/Richmond/Manassas, VA –  Four of the NOVA Cavalier teams were in action this weekend; two of them won the Tournament Championships to cap off a strong month of May for the entire Cavs progam.

17U-Lin team won the Under Armour Regional Championship presented by Zero Gravity.  NOVA finished 2-0 in the pool play with wins over Fredericksburg Heat Red 45-34 and CVA Flight 56-17; Jamel Howard (Tuscarora) and Tavon Tarpley (Langley) paced the Cavs with 22 total points each in the first two games.  On Day 2 of the tournament, Cavaliers won 58-35 over EBA All-Stars behind Seamus Maloney’s (WT Woodson) 13 points to earn a spot in the final.  In the Championship game, NOVA won a fierce back and forth affair against Bawllerz NYC (60-56 final).  Nate Shafer (Langley) had a monstrous 12 points and 20 rebounds in the final, with Jamel Howard leading all scorers with 17 points, followed by Tarpley and Danny Krug (Robinson) with 11 and 10 points each.  Cavs finished 4-0 in the Zero Gravity’s event and will look to defend their Battle of NOVA crown next weekend for the third consecutive year.

Coach Sullender’s 11U/4th grade Cavs team finished the VA Hokies Summer Slam as the tournament champion.  NOVA finished the tournament in Manasass with a perfect 4-0 record.  Cavaliers defeated NOVA 94ft Blue 38-14 and D1SA 39-8 on Saturday, then won a rematch against 94ft Blue in the semifinal (28-14).  In the final, Cavs took down Gainesville Hurricanes 32-20 to earn their first Tournament Championship of the season!  Congratulation goes out to a hard-working 11U Cavaliers team.

In other Cavs results, the 16U-Corish team went 2-2 in the Adidas League of Nation Challenge with solid performances throughout the entire weekend.  The 13U-Weeren Cavs also played in the same event, which included a strong showing in a 59-50 to the host – DC Thunder.  Next weekend, the entire NOVA Cavaliers organization will be in action at the 9th annual Battle of NOVA Invitational.  Look for the schedule to be publish by Wednesday.
